engine rebuild, expensive? hard to do?

i'm sure the topic's been discussed plenty but there's a lotta titles to search thru. anyway, i'm in maryland at the moment for an airforce school and go home to florida in about 5 weeks. have a 87 turbo II with a blown motor that i wanna start working on when i get back. i've been building up my dsm pretty good and it's time to get my 7 running.

anyway, how hard is it to rebuild the motors? estimated cost? time frame for someone who's never built one? best parts to get and good place to get them from? i want some horsepower but not wanting to go that extreme (that's what my dsm is for).

bought the car for $600 from a guy and the motor looks brand new but it's blown. so guessing maybe the parts are in somewhat good condition. even the oil filter looks new. dunno what he did to it. but anyway, any advice much appreciated. thanks!

Are you sure it's blow? It might just be flooded. I haven't taken an engine apart yet (though i plan on it this summer). I know it's pretty easy to pull out of the car.

DEPENDS.... do you want to just replace seals & gaskets? If it's blown, did an apex seal take out the rotor housing? You're not gonna know until you break it down...Mine's getting rebuilt on vacation in 4 weeks, at this point she's still going strong at 184,000, but I want to do it BEFORE she craps out...At this point I have 2 new rotor housings, RotaryAviation master rebuild kit, new eng mounts, oil pump, hoses, rad, thermostat, belts, vac hoses, etc...for a total of about $2600 or so...I'll inspect the rest of the stuff (side housings, rotors, bearings, etc...) when I get her apart, so the cost might go up from there... You could probably do a simple rebuild for $800 or so, maybe less...
