Engine pulling difficulties
Engine pulling difficulties
Pulling the engine without the trans, and the trans doesn't want to separate on the bottom. I took out 4 bolts from the trans to the block and the long starter bolt. Am I missing any? It seems like it wants to, just kinda stuck. We are attacking it tomorrow with prybars and hoping that gets it, but anyone have any suggestions?
I would really rather not, I don't have any place to put the trans, really. Where is the last bolt? I got the 3 across the top, the one on the bottom passenger side, and the starter bolt. I didn't really look because I though I had read that that was all of them, but in hindsight that seems pretty stupid of me.

Well, sometimes it just kinda sticks on. Also, you do know that it has to be pulled straight out from the engine before lifting it up, right? Anyway, just give the motor a few whacks with a rubber mallet and it should break loose.
I bet you are missing a bolt. Yank off the uim and look down and see if you are missing any. if not, put a jack under the trans, and give the motor a good wiggle. Take your hoist and lift up a bit and keep wiggling the motor, it will eventually come out.

There is a lower driver's side bolt that is recessed and hidden by the starter while it's on. You may have missed it after you removed the starter.
Basically, the starter is held by a long bolt and nut and a short bolt (the short bolt threads to the Bellhousing. Then another bolt is visible near it holding the bellhousing and engine together.
At the top, don't forget the bolt near the oil filter or water hose, and the nut on the other side of the hanger near the top middle of the bellhousing.

Also, sometimes the dowls that locate the transmission will stick. I've had them fall out of the engine after pulling the transmission, come out on the bellhousing, and totally lock the transmission and engine together. Penetrating oil sprayed into the seam between the two helps, and a rocking motion will generally shake it loose.
Took off starter, took out bolt, engine was out in about 3 minutes after that.
"My bad"
I've done enough tranny installations in cars that I think I can tackle the aligning of the shaft pretty well, but we will see..... it's always a pain. I just have no where to put the tranny once it's out, that's the only problem.
