Engine Problem. Burning too much Oil?

Ok...
So before I get bashed on, this is my first car that I can actually work on, and have not had much experience with cars. And I am totally new to rotary engines.
Sooo yesterday, my car started making that really annoying loud buzzing noise.
I checked the coolant and that wasn't the problem.
So with a jumping heart, I checked the oil, and I noticed there wasn't any oil on the stick.
I rushed to walmart and got me penzoil 10-30 ( which was already in there) and added more oil.
I was missing about 1.5 quarts of oil
My engine was rebuilt, and it only has about 250 miles on the thing.
Now my question is, is it normal for my engine to burn so much oil, during that short of a time period?
There are times when I get really thick white smoke coming from my exhaust too.

I am also having idle issues. It scares me because it tries to die on me at stop signs and stuff. Right now, I'm heel and toeing it so that I raise the rpms while I'm braking. I was wondering if there was a way to fix this as well? It idles well for a couple second and then it jumps around from 1000 to 500 and it eventually just chooses to die on me.

Thanks in advance

you shouldnt be burning that much oil. check for vacuum leaks to fix the idle and make sure the OMP linkage going to the throttle body is not stuck open.

Check the oil at every gas fill up and see if the problem continues. Maybe it wasn't quite filled all the way up on the first fillup. Normal oil consumption is about a quart every 2,000 miles, but IIRC sometimes it can be as much as a quart every 1,000 miles if you slam the throttle a lot (you shouldn't be so soon after a rebuild).

Thick white smoke isn't normal either. That means fuel or coolant. Smell it. Light smoke briefly at startup is normal though. Could just be condensation or a little fuel was leftover in the engine from when you turned it off.

Drive you car light and gradually increase to normal driving by the time you reach 1,500 miles btw, then change the oil. If you still have oil, fuel, or coolant consumption/smoking problems a 100 miles or so from now then it sounds like someone screwed up the rebuild.
