Engine Painting

It would not be proper for me to reassemble my engine without making it look a little better, so I bought some engine enamel and started painting my manifold parts.

I first wiped off the manifolds with a paper towel soaked in Lacquer thinner, then taped off the bolts and vacuum nipples, and began spraying. I used $4 a can Dupli Color engine enamel from Auto Zone. After spraying the parts, I took another paper towel soaked in thinner and wiped off the gasket surfaces and top of the dynamic chamber, leaving a reverse lettering effect. I'll paint the irons this same color, along with the lower manifold and throttle body. Then I will paint my rotor housings with an aluminum color.

Off topic, but here is the result of about 8 hours of five lug swapping this weekend:

Three weeks till I start it up and hear that rotary rumble again . . .

Nice work! I love the threads you have about the progress. It's cool to see how well it's coming along.

I like what you did with the UIM. Most guys would probably paint it something bright or shiny! I was thinking of painting mine black or dark gunmetal over the winter..

DAMN, that looks nice. I think I'll do that to mine when I pull the engine out for a rebuild/port-job. I'm gonna repaint my car a nice dark blue color, think I'll see if I can do the engine in the same kind of color.

Wow, looks great! Did you use sand paper after you painted on the high spots to get the raised effect?

He said that he used thinner, I used that in comination with some 600 grit sandpaper, just to fresh up the metal a little bit.

88IntegraLS, you found that you didn't need to sand blast them I guess? Even though my Manifolds were fairly clean, I was unable to get In those hard to reach crevices. So, not only did I sandblast the Manifolds, I did the whole Drivetrain! This was accented with Flat Aluminum on Gloss Black with a shot of Clear coat. Turned out sexy.

Yours look slick.

Thanks everyone! I wanted something subtle so I decided against doing my engine plates in yellow to match the car. The reverse lettering idea came to me a few minutes before I started spraying after I got through wiping off the parts.

I didn't get the parts 100% sterile because of the texture of the casting but the paint is very very sticky (I touched some of it on accident while wiping off a manifold face) and I doubt I will have trouble with it coming off, unless I use a pressure washer on it, which I don't plan on doing.

I might go over the top of the dynamic chamber with some 600 grit . . that would look sweet. It looks bare and a little scuffed up there now. The black engine in the yellow bay should look different than a normal FC.

Good idea going with black on a yellow engine bay, it makes a good contrast. Looks mean too.

Get that baby going man.
