Engine overhaul after 150-170 K's ???

Hi every body. I am the proud new owner of an 1987 RX7.
It currently has 150,000 Ks on it. I was told by the owner that
some were between 150 and 170 Ks the rotary engine of an
RX7 needs to have an complete overhaul done to it, do to
gasket leeks. Which would run me about $3000 CND. However
looking around on the Internet I have read reports that the
engines can last up to 300 Ks if treated right.

So my question is any of this true or am I getting bad info?

well thanks for any help you can give me.

Ps: I hope this is not one of those questions
that every body asks.

I always say "If it anit broke, don't fix it"

but you should start off by changing all the fluids, oil, coolent, tranny fuild/ oil, diff oil, and chang the spark plugs and wires. Make sure you battery is in good condition and do a compression test if you really want to know if the motor is still good

all this can be found in a good ole trusty Haynes Manual...A must for an RX7 owner

Yes and no.

Is your car a turbo?
170K for a NA isn't too bad, but a turbo engine would be getting 'tired'.

Your best bet is to have a compression check done. That will tell you the state of the engine.

The term overhall is kind of arbitrary. You could spend a lot less and just replace all the engine seals, or go all out and get a full rebuild (including new housings, etc etc.)

Where in Canada are you?
In the T.O area you could go check out Mazdees, they can do a comp test and you can go from there.

well i'm on 170k as we speak and my engine runs perfect, minus the bac, which needs to be cleaned. If u keep up with the mantinace the motor should last awhile(200k-250k, <-- it's what i am expecting to get outta mine)

most people here are from the US so we always try to use miles and USD$ when posting

PS go join www.bcrx7.com there is a local forum there. we have a vancouver meet on may 10th which doesn't help you much but I think the island people have meets too.

is it turbo or non turbo? if it's non turbo and running fine it'll probably last awhile. if it's turbo it might be reaching it's end. I have 175k on my turbo though and it's still perfect.
