engine not running, need some help asap

alright so heres the deal i just bought an 86 NA FC. the guy that i bought if off of only had the car for about a month or so planning on turning it into a project car but never got around to doing it. so i bought it off him not knowing anything about the car. well ive been spending the last few days working on it when ive had time trying to get it running. well to start i got some new plugs and wires, and when i replaced them i realized that the last person that had messed with the plugs and wires didnt know what they were doing. they had leading wires going to trailing plugs and vise vera, and the wires switched around from the front rotor to the rear one. anyways i cleared that all up and the ignition system is definitely working cause the car is definitely getting spark. well the next problem was fuel and realized that the fuel pump wasnt even turning on. i pulled the carpet up in the back to get the fuel pump and then see the wires broken and half assed spliced together. fixed that by soldering the wires back together, but of course the fuel pump was still not getting power. i jumped power to it and nothing so i had to get a new fuel pump, well one from the junk yard anyways, but it works. the fuel pump is still not getting power when turning the car on but i got around that for the time being just by jumping power to it. so i go to start the car and it cranks for a second and starts and then DIES immediately. tried again and again, same thing it starts for a quick second and then it dies there is also a HUGE amount of smoke coming out the exhaust while its runnign for those few seconds. i know it doesnt smell like coolant at all so im not sure what thats all about. thought maybe it was just flooded so went ahead and pulled the plugs and cranked the engine over and put the plugs back in and nothing. next i checked the compression on each rotor, i pulled the check valve out of the compression gauge so it wouldnt hold the pressure that way i could see if all three sides of the rotor hold compression. the first rotor was around 70-75psi on all three sides and when i put the check valve back in the total pressure it held was about 75psi. the second rotor readings were almost the EXACT same readings. well from there i was kinda stuck and thats just about were im at right now. also there is this weird sound coming from right around the fuel rail when the fuel pump is on, it almost sounds like theres a leak somewhere or something but theres definiely something wrong. can any of you guys tell me where i should go next so i can try to get this thing up and running. im not too fimiliar with the FC's cause im an FD owner but thats not on the road right now thats why i bought this FC. well any help at all is great and thanks again

You should be able to hear the fuel moving through the lines and the rail..... all running cars make that sound when the fuel pump is on.... you prob know this though..... perhaps injectors are clogged and always injecting?

Maybe try ether based starting fluid?

Just to make sure, you have the afm on when trying to start it

so you've got fuel, you've got spark and you have some compression.. good luck

well about the noise near the rail.......... when the fuel pump puts the fuel up to the motor once it reaches a certin pressure it just stops right, i mean the pump of course stays on but once there is enough fuel there and the is enough pressure it stops until you hit the throttle. well the sound almost sounds like somewhere the fuel is leaking and the fuel is constantly running into the engine and going somwhere unknown. tomorrow im gonna hook a fuel pressure guage up to it and see if it holds any pressure. i also unbolted the 2 ten MM bolts at the end of the fuel rail closest to the front of the car and had my friend jump the fuel pump to make sure its getting up there and as soon as he did it fuel came shootin out.

and either i dont know or right now im just drawing blanks, but AFM??????????

and yea like i said im goin step by step, i got spark, im pretty sure i got fuel, and i definitlely got enough compression for it to run, just gotta find out whats holding the motor from running more then 2 seconds.

Our fuel systems are open, there is a sending line and a return line to the tank, in other words there is never just a pressure build up, its always running when they key is in the on position.

The airflow meter must be connected for the ecu to do many things, including run the fuel pump (unless u jump the lil plug to run the pump)... But also how much injectors are open, and I know on one of my RX-7s spark didnt always happen without it.

The fuel pump doesn't work unless you are cranking the car over, unless you jump the two pins in the green plug up by the air cleaner box.
I would check the AFM to make sure it is working correctly. If it is not working correctly the car will run for about a second and then die.
And the fuel system DOES hold pressure. It does have a return line, but it holds a resting pressure on the incoming side of the pressure regulator. I don't remember offhand the resting pressure, I think it was around 35 psi. You can check the running pressure with the green connector jumped and the key on.
The smoke is just the accumulated fuel from trying to start the car, I wouldn't worry about that until you get the car running. If it continues too long after the car is running, you have a problem.
If it will start but not keep running, the two places I would look are the ECU (I had one get wet once and do exactly what yours is doing), and the other is the AFM.

I didn't mean for it to be inferred that the fuel line has no pressure, but rather that the pressure won't build up so much that the pump will stop (in cars that do this w/o a return line -- like if the end of line line was the fuel rail, then the pump would just keep increasing the pressure until its pump couldnt fight it anymore without pump control.
