Angry engine locked up, but why?

well, i'm pretty sure my engine is toast some of you may have seen my post the other week about what i thought was a bad starter. the starter wouldn't turn the engine over, and now i know why, the engine is locked up i can't even get the engine to budge when i hook a strap up to the car, put it in 5th gear, and pull on it with my truck. the rear tires just skid.
it all happened when i came out of a store after a half-hour, and the engine wouldn't turn over. so i towed the car home, and after monkeying with it, i've come to the conclusion that the engine is locked up. how would this happen? the car was running just fine when i shut it off.
anyways, for some reason the search feature isn't working for me, but is there any tiny bit of a chance that i can just dump some ATF in the engine, and hope it breaks up the carbon? if the engine does eventually break loose, can i expect damage to the seals and housings?
thanks, i hope to get the car running again, but things don't look too good right now

It can either be carbon lock, or a lodged apex seal. Either way, now there is probably damage to the housings.

When you had it pulled while in fifth gear, what direction was the car being pulled? From the front or rear? With arbon lock you want to revesre the direction of the engine, moving forward-put in reverse or moving backwards put in 1st-5th.

This happened to my friends RX7, but it turned out to be a dislodged apex seal.

Just to make sure, take a breaker bar and put your car in neutral and try to turn the front main pulley not hard tho, you may damage a housing that might be salvagable... I would guess lodged apex seal sooner then carbon lock if it was sitting such a short time and you didn't say anything about running roughly prior.

Try to think positvely, time for a rebuild, street port and headers!
