engine hesitation/stutter

I looked through this second gen forum for about 10 pages, tried the search, nothing came close to my problem(s).

when i purchased the car (1986 GTU), it ran fine, proper warm up when started with the car out of gear, drove fine, etc.

Then i took the car down to the car wash, washed under the hood to take a lot of the dirt and dust off (car had been sitting for about 3 months). I didn't use the high pressure, just the small flow.

after that point, the car does not do the warm up procedure, it slowly makes it way upto 2500ish, and it stutters/hesitates when idling. It also hesitates about .5 seconds after pushing the accelerator for the engine to respond.

I am also getting hesitations from the engine when driving down the highway. I can feel the engine stutter/stumble, almost like a miss fire. It does this all the way upto about 3500 rpm.

The car also has the problem at the 3600-4000 rpm range. I don't know if its the auxilary ports not being opened or the grounds.

It has a brand new air filter, i have new NGK plugs and a new oxygen sensor that I am going to install. Also planning on reseating all the grounds and making sure all are installed. I did check as many vac lines as i could reach, all seemed to be on tight.

Any other ideas or suggestion would be helpful. And keep in mind, I do not know my way around the engine compartment, so link to info on where to find certain things and instructions for removal/install would greatly help.

Spray some contact cleaner (CDC QD contact cleaner from Home Depot or Equiv) into the TPS, work the TPS plunger in & out, repeat.

When the TPS gets dirty or worn, it can have dead spots in the resistance value seen by the ECU.
If this happens at say 3k, the ECU sees "idle" and gives a fuel cut.

Welcome to the forum.
You will get the hang of the search feature with practice.

I have a mirror FTP site with the manuals in PDF format at the link in my sig.
Download & print what you need.
The TPS info is in the "fuel & emissions" section.

I have a couple guesses...the engine was hot when you sprayed cold water all over it, right? Could have cracked something.

Or, you could have gotten water in your air intake.

the engine was still cold, i only drove it 4 blocks to the car wash. and i was careful to give it 10 minutes before even getting it wet. I will clean the TPS and see if that doesn't provide a fix. Thanks for the good info.
