engine falter
We have an 1988 Mazda RX-7 SE
When restarting at operating temperature the engine falters & refuses to idle. If the throttle is feathered & r.p.m.'s kept high, the car can be driven & condition clears quickly. No problems when cold starting.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas what could cause this?

Welcome.
I had a similar problem where my BAC plug would come off and cause close to what you describe. Mine wouldn't clear itself.
Almost sounds like a minor increase in idle speed may solve it.
How does it idle just prior to the problem after restarting?
The TPSs are also notorious on these cars.
Cheers Didn't want to see you left hanging.

We haven't owned our RX-7 for long so we're still learning.
The air adjust-screw on top of the throttle body was adjusted for max idle speed, 800 rpm was all we could attain.
The problem is persistant but not constant. Idle can be smooth for extended periods.
I am not familiar with the term TPS.
Thanks for your response

TPS = Throttle Position Sensor (source of a lot of probs.)
The downloadable Factory Service Manual is invaluable. I would suggest downloading the 04a one first since this has a troubleshooting guide.
Since mine's a turbo it uses its Bypass Air Control valve a little differently but I would still check out that your plug is on good.
Cheers & Best of luck

waymon, I occasionally have the same issue, generally if the cars been given a good flogging and left sit for 20 mins in the sun... starts up normal, rpms drop and throttle is required to keep engine from stalling. Runs real crappy and burbly.
I've always assumed it was a minor 'hot start flood' which is a common problem with these cars. Search on flooding and you'll find heaps of information. Since it is easily dealt with I've never worried about it... though might if it did it more often.
