engine builders, give me your opinion, please.

My transmission died, and while the car was off the road I decided to get my engine rubuilt, since it had 127k miles on it, and felt like it was losing power. I decided to try out Turner Design & Racing (www.turnerdr.com) since they are cheap and no one on the forum had had an experience with them.

One of my housings had a cross threaded sparkplug hole (guy before me did that) So I bought one from someone on ebay, who said it was taken from a running engine, and sent that to AZ along with my engine.

I just got an email from Turner that says:

"Your engine is inspected. The housing you sent is not usable due to bad
flacking of the chrome. You also have worn oil pump chain and side
seals, corner buttons and oil control rings are out of speicification. "

1) Flaking of the chrome, I'm assuming, means the finish on the inside of the housing? How big of a deal is this? Is it safe to forgo the warrantee and just say "put it in anyway" ? they sell housings for $450, ouch

2) Oil pump chain; I know what that is. What should that cost?

3) what are corner buttons?

4) shouldn't side seals and oil control rings be part of the rebuild anyway? i.e. they shouldn't be tacking any more money on for that?

I'm afraid that they're gonna take me for a ride, since i probably come off a little newbie-ish.

They're not open yet, I'll let you know what they say when i call...

1.) Flaking of the chrome can be bad, instead of the rotors/apex rubbing against pure steel, they rub against a chrome finish and its what gives you the sealed compression you need in each chamber.

2) I doubt it'd be expensive from a member....I can probably get one for you if you wanted.

3.) probably corner seals

4.)not always, depends what kind of rebuild kit you got. Goto Atkins and look at different kits they offer.

Its okay to sound newbish, but confer with professional opinion on this site. Respected members with lots of post and knowledge

ok. while we were talking about options for the housings, he said i could send him the set of s4 turbo housings I had and that they would not only work, but give me a little more power (going into a s4 na). anyone ever heard of this? I was pretty suprised.

other stuff is cheap to replace, except oil control rings, but he's gonna find me some used ones in spec for free

so far the experience with these guys has been good, but I'll wait till the engine is worn in to give the official reccomendation.
