engine backfires a lot when started cold
The past week when I first started my 91 vert in the morning, it would backfire like crazy (shotgun sounding backfires but goes away when hot) and it would almost die when I put it in gear as the rpms would drop that is. Well, this morning it did the same thing but when I put it in reverse the car completely died and now I can't get it to start. Smells a lot like gas when cranking also. Anybody got an idea?

hum......that is happening to me only when cold but like you said when it warms up its ok. I just put an msd 6a in and it seems to help somewhat. You might want to see if maybe your not getting enough fire to burn the fuel off in the cumbustion chamber. Maybe do a tune up with new plugs and wires. I don't know I'm not an expert but just have seen some things working on my 7. Hope this helps a little.

The backfiring or put put puting at idle is from worn out trailing coils I beleive. No way to really garantee a fix withought spending a ton of cash on new coils.
