End play

I know this will sound really dumb but......

The dial indicator that I ordered finally came in. I checked the end play and the gauge moved 3 notches and the gauge said that each mark is .001 inch. So, does that mean I have 3 thousandths inch end play or 30 thousandths? If it means 3 thousandths, then I guess I need a thicker spacer, correct.

If each notch is .001 then you have .003 end play. If the gauge said each notch is
.010 then you would have .030 end play.

Thanks,
That is what I was thinking but I'm just not familiar with that type of gauge. Most everything I use has a digital readout.
