electrical & steering woes

My first post here and from what i see this is a great forum.
I have an '87 gxl non turbo. got at an auction for DIRT CHEAP. done alot of tinkering and the engine passed emmisions REALLY WELL for having 256,000 klm's on it.
Back to my question . when car is at any speed over idle it charges fine but at idle with lights , heater and radio on the voltage drops from 13.5 down to 10-12 volts . i just had the bearings changed in it and the teminals cleaned today since they were noisy. NOTE: did not have the regulator replaced alt shop said it was ok . I am thinking of Checking all the grounds tomorrow . Do you think i am in the right direction.
Next problem the power steering alarm on the left of the frivers foot going off and losing power steering . any help here i checked the forum but still not sure where to start.
Note: I have resoldered all the points in the cpu and the clock and they all A-1 now clock working again too I also disconected the aas in the suspenson that seemed to help for awhile but it just delays when the problem occurs . i ahve done all the normal checks oil , leaks, yadda yadda . I heard something about a wire to the steering column !

Well thanks all
