Unhappy Electrical Problems

My tail lights work when i brake but the running lights do not work when my head lights are on...along with the tail lights, my cluster and other interior running lights do not run either, unless i brake...is this a fuse problem or a short in my wiring...if someone could help me out i would greatly appreciate it Thanx

Alot of times, this boils down to a problem in the switch. I would probably start there.

The switch?

If this were the switch then would my lights light up when i step on the brakes? even when my headlights are off i can step on my brakes and make my cluster light up as well as my yellow indicator lights in the front and everything else that is supposed to light when the headlights are turned on...would that still be a problem in the switch?

Its very possible.... I am a fan of trying the easy stuff first. Its entirely possible that its a short, but wouldnt you rather do the simple stuff first?

The Parking lights and cluster lights get their power from the same wire that sometimes frys in the headlight switch.

The brake lights and headlights work on entirely different circuits. The only thing the least bit common between the parking lights and the head lights is that they are both turned on at the same spot, but the internal connections of the switch are as different as the cruise control switch and the turn signal switch.

Probably a smoked headlight switch and harness. This has been covered quite a few times including in the FAQ for FC thread at the top if this section

If the switch or harness is burnt you will need to replace both.

You should also go around the car and clean all the bulb contacts for the parking lights. Chances are that they are corroded and that is what has caused the switch or harness at the switch to melt.
