Electrical malfunction?

I was working on one of my headlights because a rod had fallen off causing the headlight not to come up when on. Once i figured out that i didn't have all the parts to fix it i took a brake and went inside the car to listen to some music. When i turned the music on it immediately shorted out, but came back on. It repeated that for awhile, but i figured it was just a loose wire behind the deck. So, i went inside and came out later to leave, and the car turned over too slow to start. I tried again and it just made a ticking sound then finally all the power went out including beeping sound when the door is open. I jumped started it and it was running fine, then turned it off to see if it would start again. The batter gauge was halfway up before i turned over the car, but when i did everything shorted out again. I went to check the batter and i saw that whenever i touched the terminals it was sparking. I'm hoping it's not the alternator. What do you guyz think?
