Electrical help please
Hi all,
I have an 87 Sport...and my battery isn't carging. I've checked the batt(2 weeks old), I've checked the alt (14.25 volts an VERY steady), I've also done my best to see if the regulator is causing a big draw or something (bout 110 mA with the ignition off)
The other smptom of this particular gremlin is, when running (after a day or so after a batt recharge) when I hit the brakes when a large draw circuit is on(eg hadlights or rear window defroster is on) I get a big drop in voltage (from about 14.25 to 12 or so)
Any help would be greatly appriciated.
Tanks a lot,
Pr0dis

Former Moderator. RIP Icemark.
A 110 mA draw is very high... it should be no higher than 70mA and generally much closer to 40mA.
110 mA will draw a good battery down in about a week, and a poor battery down over night.
In addition it sounds like the regulator is shot in the alt or the alt itself is failing from your voltage drop with the brakes on.

you can check the battery voltage after driving for a while then check it again later to to see if it's draining.
or disconnected the battery when you are not driving the car and see if it'll start next time.
also is that 14.25 volts across the alt or battery? measure across the battery to make sure it's getting to the battery.
droping to 12v with everything on is pretty normal.
