electrical gurus help!!
I have a 91 n/a, and I have a short somewhere. I was driving home on a long road trip and now whenever I hit the brake pedal, all the electrical goes out for a second. What I noticed what was affected was the stereo, the dummy guage light cluster, the voltage guage, and I think the Oil gauge might drop a little as well. All this happens when I hit the brake pedal. NOw if I keep the pedal down for a period of time, the short is the same as if I just tap the break, a split second of nothing. I also noticed that I get this short if I turn the four ways on, but not the blinkers. Also when I turned the headlights on it happened as well. NOw that Im home, I turned the car off and tried starting it again, and I have nothing. Everything dead, even the battery. Took a reading on it and it was like 1 volt. Spn now its on a charge but I dont know what to do.
Any Ideas?

Check your light bulbs for one that failed, and the filament is shorting to the base (ground) of the bulb.
That probably subsequently blew a fuse for your alternator.
It is worth checking, it happened that way to me.

Well I hooked the battery back up after giving it a charge. So that also in turn rest the ECU. And it started right up. It started as well after turning it iff and back on again a few times. I guess ill have to wait it out and see.

Sounds like the Alt might have been failing... are you sure it is charging?
If things go off whne you press the brakes or turn on you lights its often related to how much voltage is available... it almost sounds like you were running only on your battery.

I dont believe its the alternator. I know I recall looking at it many times today on the way home, Especially when trying to diagnosis the problem while driving. The alt gauge was right at 14.5 volts approx. Plus the battery kept a steady charge while the car was running. Checked that after I got it started again.
Any other options?
