Does your '86 have AAS (Auto Adjust Suspension) as was standard equipment on the GXL model? If so, then the AAS computer is probably the culprit. I had the same problem on my '90 GXL until I eliminated the AAS. Located within your spare tire compartment you will find an AAS computer (metal box appproximately 4" x 4" x 2") with a wire connector plugged into the box. Unplug the box and this should solve your electrical problem. However, your suspension will remain in the mode that it was when the wires were disconnected.

Sounds like your alternator and/or battery is on it's way out. Usually the alternator will die and kill the battery, or the battery will die and kill the alternator. Either way, failure of one usually leads to failure of both.

Bringing it back from the dead. Did you fix the problem? My old FC had this problem and I fixed it by grounding the engine. I grounded the engine using the upper intake manifold to the chassis. Problem solved after that.
