The sensor is located on the tube near the water pump. If you disconnect it, the fan runs. It may be a bad thermo switch, or possibly the wire connecting it. Check those.

Uh, that's supposed to happen.

Then you have a short somewhere...I have no idea...If you have modified the wiring of your fan, it could be anything. Best inspect the wiring and relays involved to check for possible problems.

Yes! Unplugging that sensor will make the fan run.

Actually I think if you ground it the fan runs.

You say you have a manual switch to run the fan. Your problem could be the switch, the wiring to the switch or the relay. I'd check the wiring to the manual switch first. If that wire is grounded the fan will run.

Does the fan run all the time? Or does it cycle?

it only used to go on when it was really hot out in the middle of the summer, or when i flicked the switch for whatever reason, which was barely ever

i disconnected the fan at the fan. so now its not running. although on the dash the little red light on the temp gauge goes on now, which usually goes on if your overheating and then fan goes on, but im not overheating according to the gauge.

ill check for a rely to the fan switch.

My fan comes on in the summer after spirited driving. Or if I have the car parked after driving it a while I will turn the key on and it will run. I guess the sensor gets heat soaked and clicks the fan on.

From your photo it looks like your sensor wire's just broken. Just find the other end of it (match the colour) and solder it back together.

I believe it was an option in the US, but all the FC's I've seen (JDM) have them.
...nor do i see anything about it in the manual...
It's at the back of the Cooling System chapter in the S4 and S5 FSM's and on page 101 of the Haynes manual.

Not on the S4. The fan temp switch is normally closed and opens when the trigger temp is reached, turning on the fan. So pulling the wire off will have the same effect.
The S4 has quite a complicated system because it has a warning light that comes on when the fan runs due to high temp, but doesn't when the A/C runs the fan. It has a little control box under the dash.
The S5 doesn't have a warning light so the system is much simpler, just a relay switched by the temp switch. Grounding the S5's fan temp switch terminal will make the fan run.

That temp switch is just for the fan. The temp sender for the gauge is on the side of the engine's rear plate under the oil filter and next to the oil pressure gauge sender.

I think that's enough from me...
