I have a Auto Meter EGT gauge installed in my 88 T-II.
I highly recommend it for any turbo car. Scott89TII is right there are to many variables in regard to accurate EGT readings, due to the fact that every car is diffrent in regards to modifications, tuning, and diffent variables including ambient air temperature, and the time of day
you are reading your gauge. I have noticed that my readings are pretty consistent. When im flushed on the highway my EGT will hit between 1400-1450 degress fahrenheit. I have pushed it to 1475 degrees, but not more than that for safety purposes.

But how do you use this gauge to help you. How did you tune your car using this gauge?

So if you saw it go to 1500F you would back off? EGT gauges are slow and not very fast.

Sorry for all the questions. Just wondering about the setup.

James

Autometer Guages are very fast, though I've never seen my car run higher that 1400* F deg, where is your probe mounted Donn?

My probe is mounted next to the down pipe, by the way I have a R.B. downpipe so its mounted in the part where your so supposed to install the probe.

i found that my egt guage reads about 750 in 3rd pulls to red (egt 1 inch closer to turbo then 02 in dp). but my car isn't dyno tunned yet and running way rich... But i do agree that the reason i baught my EGT was for the safety factor in knowing when there might be a problem ... the more guages to tell you a problem... the better the chances of you not investing another 3000 into another engine!

so if the gauge reaches a temp that is above the norm...this would tell me what (specifically)?...what factors occur that could cause this...anyone know what im getting at?

SidewaysFc it would tell you that you dont have enough fuel, or air delivery to your motor, and that you should check into it, to see whats causing you to run lean. You either run lean, because theres not enough fuel, or not enough air, cool air that is. In other words your air/fuel mixture is not right.

so in other words...your saying i can experiment with higher boost...and when it gets too hot i know when i have reached the limit to either my fuel or enough cool air flow?...isnt that kind of like tuning? because some say you can't tune through the EGT gauge and there are too many factors that play in the temps one would sometimes see

That's is exactly what you are doing.&nbsp There is a max safe EGT numbers, and you can always target that number for safety when adjusting both the fuel *and* ignition timing.

These people are full of ****.&nbsp I always get into arguments about tuning with EGT versus widebands.&nbsp Widebands can't tell you **** when adjusting ignition timing - the EGT can.&nbsp All I use for tuning is an EGT and a dinky AFR gauge - people get all uptight when I mention that, cause they start to lecture me about widebands and **** which I think is a waste of money; I get away with a 10-LED AFR gauge hooked up to the factory, narrow-band O2 sensor no problem.

Can someone say back from the Dead?

Ted really knows his ****, although I wouldn't buy an EGT again (i sold my other one) because I blew my 2nd motor out at the track a while back I was watching both my a/f guage and EGT guage and both read safe, the
EGTs were about 1300.

But the again the temps are all relitive to where you mount the probe, if you really wanna use the EGT to help to you should first go to a dyno and get some a/f numbers to see what temps mean what...

Sorry to hear of the bad experience BlackRx7 - the EGT sounds a little too low.&nbsp It's possible to hurt the motor running too rich also!

I think this thread was started when I was on a short hiatus earlier this year, so I didn't get to see the entire thread until now.
