EGR valve removal

I've been reading up on EGR valve removal on the forums, and there seems to be several people insisting on it doing several things.

I.e., helping with "ping" or "Detonation", or improving gas milage, or increasing power, while others insist it only exists to help with emissions and can be removed without worry.

Is there a definitive take on this? As I said, some of the posts I read were conflicted, and I don't want to remove a part that can give any of the beneficial effects listed above (But emissions? Who cares. My state doesn't have 'em really.)

Mazda ditched the EGR for S5. The rotary has enough natural exhaust overlap that EGR is largely unnecessary.
