EGI Fuel pump electrics

Hi,

Hope someone on here can help with some promlems I've been having.
Car is an '89 EGI, I have recently done the rats nest and air pump / emmissions removal stuff and (predictably) the car is now not starting. The engine will turn over and spark but not fire as the fuel pump is not priming / pumping fuel.

Somewhere in the car's history it has been owned by some complete pirates, the wiring has been seriously bodged, it had 2 ecus in the pass footwell (one faulty) and none of the wiring colours or relay positions from the FSM seem to match. I've got a fluctuating 12v signal at the fuel pump when the ign is turned on but nothing before that and the pump is not priming.

Please could someone point me in the right direction of where the fuel pump relay should be located / looks like and if posible (and even better), what the circuit diagram should look like for this system. From looking at the FSM's and various other guides on the net, it isn't clear where the fault on my system is.

Many thanks

On the s5 the fuel pump relay is triggered directly by the ECU (s4 is triggered by the AFM). Look in the fuel and emissions control section of the s5 diagrams.

Jumper you yellow two socket fuel pump check connector with a piece of wire. Key to ON only. Pump should be heard to run. If not, say so.

Ok thanks lads, good places to start.

Am I correct in thinking as stock the fuel pump resistor relay is behind the pass side headlight (inside the bulkhead) on a metal bracket. There is also a main relay - that's up near the charcoal canister on the firewall - drivers side?
I thought all the EGI's had a flapper type air flow meter - Is there a safety cutout switch in it that will turn off the fuel pump?

Thanks

Fuel pump resistor relay is where you said it is. Fuel pump check connector (yellow, two socket) is nearby near the right strut tower on a USA.

MAIN RELAY is pulled in by the ENGINE fuse and that fuse also powers the fuel pump/circuit opening relay. So if the MAIN RELAY clicks/pulls in, then the engine fuse is probably good.

Even if the fuel pump resistor relay fails to just one of its two positons, it should still power the fuel pump.
