ECU inconsistancy

When I asked a friend of mine why my car one day will run like a bat out of hell (laying waste to cars like turbo eclipses and audi TT's) and others I struggle keeping up with much slower cars. He told me it was because I'm running a 16 year old factory ECU and I wouldn't have that problem if I went standalone. So is it true the factory ECU in a '89 N/A would cause such inconsistancies?

I don't know but I kinda have the same problem. My gas mileage varies between 19mpg and 23mpg. It bounces around from week to week but it use to be the same every week around 22mpg. I tried driving exact same routes but mileage is inconsistent.

Well that and performance issues. It might be that I don't drive my car enough.

I've been told that the factory ECU runs really rich for the NA's. If you get a good intake, exhaust and a fuel controller like an SAFC or a Emanage, then you can lean the car out and get some pretty decent performance.

See I was considering getting a piggy back. However if I go standalon isn't there a number of things (like AFM) that I can get rid of?
