Help...
My '91 (b13, fi...i think....duh), has 86K miles, and recently the 'check engine' light came on... at the same time, my tach quit registering. I arrived at my destination, killed the engine, and then started that sweet thing back up. Voila!.. the c/e light was out and the tach worked. So I went inside... did my duty for a couple of hours... when I came back out, she wouldn't start. Oh yeah, she turned over and finally 'caught', but when I gave her just a little gas... she gagged and coughed like this was her death bed.
Well, after $400/worth of 'diagnostics' at the local-yocal Mazda dealer, she's still sittin'. They can't figure her out. They thought it might be the ECU... to the tune of $1,000.
Hmmm.... maybe... perhaps...$1,000 here, $1,000 there. They changed her plugs, her air filter, checked the cat-converter and the exhaust.
Now, she'll start and idle, but a bit roughly. And when I gently tap on ye' olde accelerator... she responds like a wife in curlers... "Go away, jerk... I have a headache."
Man-o-man, when she was running, she screamed bloody murder. You know what I mean... doin' 70+ on the interstate and some kid with a 'Stang comes along. Fine. Just let me kick her down a few gears and whammo... I mean a launch into hyperspace!!!
But now, she sits there, sleek and sexy, like a paperweight was meant to be.
Any thoughts? Is it the ECU? I'm sure I could find one out there somewhere (once I pull it and get the service ####'s).
Forgive the breach of protocol... but you can reach me at gfisher1@parkland.edu with input, all the serious elements of which will be greatly appreciated.
