Driving 1000+ miles this weekend. How to prepare?

I've had the car up and going for about two weeks now after the auto/5spd swap. I'm running premix. this is the preparations:

2 Gal of premix, 4 bottles of 16oz bottles (will refill with gal bottles).
Tire iron, spare tire, jack, 4 jack stands. Full set of metric sockets, basic tools (screwdriver, pliers, ect). rags, eletrical tape, duct tape, 10ga wire, 16ga wire. 4 quarts of oil (still leaking a tad from the front pulley/shaft bolt). Two gallons of 50/50 premixed coolant.

Anything else that i should take?

I'm going to jack her up tomorrow and re-tighten 20 million bolts that got removed/replaced during the swap.

haha, a thousand plus miles would cost me over 150 dollars in gas with the shitty gas mileage I've been getting.

Floorjack, rubber gloves, goggles, welding equipment, GPS, emergency food rations, water filter, phrase book for translating from rotary to pistonspeak, compass, sunblock, snake bite kit, cigarettes, condoms, chewing gum (doubles as duct tape in emergencies...and brother, this is nothing if not an emergency!)

Oh man, One of my other hobbies is offroading in my Jeep and the guys I wheel with take less spares with them on the trail and they fully expect carnage!

Good luck with your trip.

just did 500 miles this past weekend

i just did about half that this past weekend. im in miami and i went to orlando this weekend. i did about 500 miles. cost me 40 dollars in gas. i drive a 89 gtu. got one rotor with low compression to boot. didnt have not one problem (knock on wood). all i did was get a can of fix-a-flat. (didnt even check the spare) but thats cause i got some new tires on her. i checked the coolant and oil. i got a bottle of 50/50 prestone mix. topped off the coolant over flow and was on my merry way. i always keep an extra bottle of oil in the car. its a good feeling to test your car on a long trip and know she can deliver with out a problem...good luck!

check your belts, coolant hoses and radiator cap. make sure that thing is sealed tight!

You have it covered when you added the duct tape. Duct tape holds the world together.

Unless you've had problems lately I wouldn't worry. When I visit my girlfriend it's ussually a 1000 mile round trip and I don't ever have trouble. FC's are great for long trips unless you have an overheating problem....... and yes, condoms are a necessity.

PS: I ussually make this trip every couple weeks.

you've got it mostly covered...a can of fixaflat is a good idea in addition to the spare...just in case!! an alternator belt is also a good thing to carry as losing that = you're screwed and it's SO easy to change. if I were you I'd get my radiator hoses changed and then you shouldn't have to worry about them for a few years. check pressure in the tires...32-34 is the most I'd put in for a such a long drive since pressure will rise with heat. enjoy!!

yeah, tire pressure check will save you loads on gas on a long drive too.

hey guys. well to update, I'm bringing my cellphone, laptop with GPS and McNally, and a work light. I'm taking a 120v converter to power the above. Anything else? I'm thinking of disconnecting the efan and replacing with the stock clutch fan and shroud. The fan works fine, but it might be more reliable?

The last few tests I've done have come out to ~17mpg. Project84 is coming over friday morning with his timing gun/light and hopefuly that will bump it up a couple mpg.

already have dual belts. I've got a pair that are a tad longer then the ones on it. I guess if i lost both, i could replace them with the two spares. Haven't tried the spares out for size on the fd alternator though

Thanks Ed. I dont think it should be a problem. I went to wall just a few days ago, and a coupel days before that went to belle fouche. Add those round trips up and its almost sioux falls. I'm kinda scared of those lugnuts, but hopefuly they won't be an issue.

Oh, and I just back from mazda with new seat belt rails and motors they work like brand new.

East nebraska. right around 600 miles. I plan to leave late friday night. get there sometime in the morning. I'd rather drive at night. The way its looking, I doubt I'll be staying a full day, but I have relatives a couple hundred miles from where I'm going.

Going to be one super full day. Anyone know of a good caffiene/stay-awake drink?

I remember a few years ago I drove 1200 miles in 23 hours in a car with 235,000 stock miles. 93 ford probe with a mazda engine, was still getting 34 mpg with full a/c the entire way... I was far less prepared then. Anyhow... on that trip I bought a 24 pack of dr pepper and drank a can an hour on the hour. Kept me wide awake until I got to marshall/longview ... where I crashed on a couch for 14 hours :P
