driveshaft f@#$%d
ok lets start from the beggining i drive an 87 rx7 5 speed non turbo. well for the past few months its been vibrating really bad and i havent had the time nor money to fix the problem at hand. well for the past couple of days its basically become unsafe to drive cause the vibrating has gotten worse. So yesterday im driving home and im shifting normal and i switch to second and the car vibrates like hell. i give it alittle gas and i hear a big bang . I look down and my shift **** busted out of the house and i was like holy ****. So i pull the car over and i llok where the the shifter use to be and i see that my driveshaft has busted off. So im like ****. i call ym wife and she comes to pick me up. well theis morning i get the car up in the air. And i see where its busted off. Its like a bolt that holds the shaft to the transmission. Tat whole thing is gone. I can feel where the shaft came loose .Now heres my question can i fix the problem myself/ do i need a new tranny / is there a bolt i can buy from autozone or the mazda dealership or do i need a whole new drive shaft. i need help on this matter please . And if anyone can help i can send pics to there email address of my problem.
thanks red

the bitch about rx-7 u-joints is that they are permanently formed to the driveshaft on both ends. The vibrating you are talking about was one of your u-joints going out, ending in failure of the joint. You have to replace the whole driveshaft. Mazdatrix.com has a generic one. Take it to a shop and have them put it in. They'll have to take the exhaust off, so you are talking an hour of labor, plus about $175 for the drive shaft. Your safety concern is valid. You should have had it looked at when the vibration started. If the joint failed while you were on the highway, you would have had the real life version of the tasmanian devil loose underneath your car.
the is a set of u-joints that are available to replace the non-replacable u-joints.

Or then again you could just buy a new car.

My only point is......The u-joint is so easy to replace. Even our RX7 staked-in ones. You merely need to follow the directions provided with the Joints from Rockford. I hate how Mazda tries to rape people on this u-joint thing. What....they saved three dollors an hour during manufactuiring by having a big machine stamp the u-joints in place vs having some worker put in a clip by hand?????? Thanks Big Mazda, your thinking if me. The only technicle thing you need to replace these joints is the ability to use a drimmel to grind off the stakes on the inside of the ears.
dremmel?
hell, I used a hand file.
But they are correct.....I found the U-joints and they work great. That thread is old though. Rockford makes a U-joint that fits the RX7 and the B-Series pickups: 430-10
The U-joint specifically for the RX-7 (narrower yoke than the pickup, different circlip placement) is 430-10A
I have a used driveshaft on an 87 GXL (5-sp NA) that I will sell as is for $50 + shipping. I will install 2 new Rockford U-joints for an additional $50 = $100 total for a rebuilt OEM driveshaft.
If the trans is shot, I have a 5-speed with 98k miles on it for sale as well for $150.
If you want the whole package, trans + driveshaft + new U-joints, I will knock $25 off it. Everything for $225.
Buy yourself some Royal Purple or Redline gear lube and install. You should be able to do this yourself over the course of a Saturday afternoon.
