Question Doors, and the people who love them...

On my red 86 GXL, there's a buncha problems with the driver side door, the power window doesn't work, the internals to the external handle appear to be malfuntioning, but the biggest problem is that the external door handle is not there. I've priced new handle assemblys at ~85 from a dealer and from mazda trix, and a window regulator at 280! I'm hoping the window is just "off track", but i haven't had too much time to look at it... any suggestions on where to get cheap parts for the door besides thepartstrader? Also, would i be better off to look at a whole new door? Thanks!

Junk Yard? eBay? I got my window switch from some junkyard. Maybe try to find someone who is parting out an old car or something.

IMHO there are way too many parts cars floating around to purchase the parts you need from a dealer. My personal advice would be to run down a complete door. You could then swap the parts over or paint the new door to match your car, assuming your paint job isn't faded or otherwise too bad to match.

junkyard! or e-bay or the buy/sell forum on here.
don't buy new when it just might break (although it took over 15 years)

Maybe you can rip out the air conditioning, swap your power steering rack for a manual rack, and then swap your power windows for non-power windows and say jenny craig made you do it!

*edit*
damn, 3 replies in 3 minutes, don't you just love this forum!

Haha.. Jenny craige is making me crawl across the car to unlock the drivers side door every time i want to use the car Just out of curiosity, though, how hard would it be to swap the locking mechanism of the handle, if i got a new door? I wouldn't want to carry a special key for the drivers side door. In refrence to the junk yards, I like the idea, i love em, but here in middle-o-nowhere, the response is usually "Is that some kinda plane or somethin'?". I'll definatly check out ebay, though..

Thanks for all the comments

Well i could get you both door handle/lock assemblies so both sides will be the same. In addition I could probably get all the locks, doors and hatch plus the ignition. if you want that, privite message me or email at mattrobb22@hotmail.com

Wonko,
I just got done putting in a new door handle, it's very easy. The lock cylinder has a clip on the back that holds it in place, kinda like a manual window crank clip. The linkage takes time and patience, but it's not too bad. The space is very small and I used long needle nosed pliers.

I bought the car with a broken handle and it drove me nuts not being able to open the drivers door. Thank god that's fixed.

Regarding the window problem.

Pull your door panel off, and unplug the power wires going to the window motor. Hook a battery up to the leads, and check if it works (then reverse the leads and repeat).

If it doesn't work it is something in your motor/regulator thats broken - in which case PM me If that works, then its either your switch, fuse, or someting else...

Jimmy - Glad to hear they're fairly easy I wanted to experiment and take mine off, but i had visions of driving around with a gaping hole in my door

Charger - I believe the motor works, i just got an email from Kevin Landers, he said that the problem is usually not the motor, but all the little plastic pieces that hold the window in place.. if this is the case, he says it's easier to buy a new motor than to try to get them so, i guess my question is.. how much for the motor/regulator?

I have a parts car that I need to get rid of. Therefore, I will sell you any interior (or exterior) door part pretty cheap....

PM me for more information, what you need, and what you want to pay....
