Door weight reduction....

First off let me just say this is not a street car and it will have a full cage. That being said I'd like to cut up the doors.

How much weight can we strip off these monster doors of ours? Anyone have a breakdown of part weight? Ie Interior panel, window, door supports, etc? I'd like to cut out the side impact supports (again I have a cage) I've heard guys getting these doors down to 14ish lbs. Not sure how they are doing it though.

There's CF ones available if you're feeling spendy and have a cage.

Well, i'm scrawny as hell and managed to pick up and mount my doors by myself.

On a budget, i'd cut out the supports, switch to riveted lexan windows, get rid of all the window tracks and window motor (if you have power windows) and holesaw everything you can. You could even cut a large percentage of the door skin out and make a fiberglass "patch"

Cheap=more work + more time

Expensive=seibon carbon doors

Thanks for the response guys. I know there are CF and glass doors available. But I'm more interested in HOW MUCH WEIGHT can be take out of one of these doors without warping etc...

Thanks!

It's gonna be less than the weight of the entire door, that's for sure. The door is easy to remove. Get bathroom scale. Weigh yourself. Remove door, lift door, reweigh yourself.

Yes, thanks for stating the obvious....

But the point of the thread is to findout if the weight savings are worth my time. I was sure the scca and drag guys all did this. So I just wanted to know if it's worth the time and effort. Or not.

You might want to ask in the race car tech section.
