Door Seals on the vert leak, need advice.

The top door seal in my vert drips water. The big part at the top has a rip in it. What would you use to seal that rip? Or is the an economical replacment you'd suggest?

Thanks in advance

The latch hooks on the top of the windshield tend to come loose. Be sure they are tight and the latches well adjusted. For rips in the top material, I use 3M 5200, it makes strong permanent repairs, but takes about a week to cure.

I have used rubberized silicon to fix, but it is should be only considered as a temp fix as it only lasts typically about a year.

replacement is always the best bet

Can you get that rubberized silicon from Home depot?
I think I'll try the temp fix for now. But I'll definatly replace them after I finish with my current projects.

Thanks for the advice Icemark

yeah, its the same type of silicon adhesive that used for aquariums (I used black though) available at most hardware stores or car parts stores.

I like Permatex 82 (weatherstrip adhesive) as it seems to have a nice flexible bond and is easily removed with kerosen or mineral spirits.

How do you do these adjustments to the latches?

tightening latches

ive got leaks coming from the top back area of my top on my vert. Sort of where that cover for the hinge on the targa is..... i took it to mazda and they were useless( thank god....better than charging me 2grand or some **** for a new top)
But yeah i am thnking it may be this latch thing, first ive heard of it being a possible problem... perhaps next would be seals, anywhere to pic em up for the vert, roof seals????
i would like to find a solution becasue when it rains hard overnight the leak goes all night and the carpet behind the drivers seat gets wet ( smells mildewy after a while and i am worried about body corrosion underneith... dont even want to think about that...)
i have noticed that if i am driving and it starts to rain the leak will slowly begin ( just drips) and if i roll my window up and down a few times it sometimes stops it..
any ideas icemark...anyone else had this problem?

That sounds like the drain pipes right behind the doors/windows on the convertible top are either plugged up, or not draining outside of the car.

I have them on my 88 vert and the fact that yours is filling with water suggests that yours has them too and they are not routed correctly.

Is this going to fix a leak that is at the top, front edge of the passenger side window? It leaks at the junction of the slider track, the window, and the top (very upper, front point of window). Driver's side is fine.

thanks

there is a drain on each side of the top, within an inch or two of where the window and metal of the door (near the outside door handle) meet. Those slots in the top, feed to drain tubes, that normally drain out the bottom of the car.

this is different than the coupes which have drain tubes at the back bottom corners of the hatch, but they too (as the convertible does) drain out the bottom of the car.

That sounds like a bad seal on either the Targa section or the A-pillar, but tightening up the latches might help

How many 'vert owners driver's door window switches get wet when it rains, or you wash the car?

Both windows drip from the front where the top window weatherstrip meets the top a-pillar weatherstrip.

There is no wind noise or anything like that-do the top weatherstrips, or A-pillar weatherstrips need to be replaced to cure this?

This is where mine is leaking from, and icemark just said tightening might help, but sounds more like a seal needs to be replaced.

All the rubber pieces in that area have to be firmly glued in place to prevent leaks. Considering their age, I am surprised at their good condition. My '88 has a little 'rain catcher' cup molded of rubber up in the top corners of the A-pillar. They are probably meant to be a last defense to divert whatever water seeps through.

yeah that little rain catcher is the dumbest Idea mazda ever came up with. Why let water into the car? I was going to gunk it all up with some expanding sealant then cut off the excess. But yes it is a major pain in the ***
