Door handles

Brand new owner/no-nothing, yada,yada, yada.

Before I can begin the big stuff (like getting this bitch through emissions with it's crap exhaust system) I thought I'd tackle some of the small stuff.
All of my exterior locks are trash and require new lock cylinders.

Being an inveterate junkyard afficianado I figured I'd pull some cylinders/ignition and have them rekeyed (which I can have done for free).
The ignition and hatch are obviously quite simple to access but the doorhandles are not.
My POS Haynes manual is naturally quite vague, stating only that three nuts must be removed.
If only.

Does the door glass need to be removed to access all the retaining nuts?
I can see/reach only the nut towards the front of the car- if there are two more they are obscured by glass and unreachable.
If the glass must be removed, how much of a PITA is this on an electric actuated window?

As long as I'm asking silly questions...
Both my logicon and warning cluster suffer from various electrical maladies.
I've found two 86's in the junkyard that could be potential donors for units that I could practice on...are the electrical connections the same from 86 to 91?
I can see the 86 logicon display face is different but the layout appears the same, only the symbols are changed.
Also, is it possible to disconnect the cable that disappears from the logicon into the bowels of the dash without tearing apart the entire dash or is this some sort of worthiness test from Mazda?

nope just pull the door panel and there is a little access window in the door. with the panel off roll it up and down till you find a good possition to access the nuts. its no big deal.

the warning cluster just needs to be resoldered. thats also not a big job. there are plenty of threads about it on this forum. search for em and your in business.

you on your own with the logicon... i got lucky... mine works just fine.

There's only 2 nuts holding the door handle on. You can get one off when the window is up, and one off when the window is down. That's with a manual window car.

You can search for this, but I do believe the electrical connections are the same.

There's several ways to do it. You can reach up by removing the instrument cluster surround. You can reach up under the dash (small hands). Or you can do it like in the FSM.

But basically, it's a worthiness test.

Good.
I saw the little access port (and popped off/saved the covers even) but sadly, both my junkyard donor cars have electric windows, so there is no easy way to "roll up/roll down" the glass since the cars are functionally dead.
*sigh*

Yeah, I'm aware of the repair procedures (I have been trying to educate myself about the Rx's vagaries), my question is about the actual connector block/pin out.

you on your own with the logicon... i got lucky... mine works just fine.
You are lucky, I guess.
My logicon functions fine but the symbols do not light up at night, so until I memorize the various locations I'm just fumbling around.

Thanks for the quick replies though.
If it weren't so damn cold I wouldn't mind just trying to figure this stuff out myself (I like to practice on junkyard cars before inadvertently destroying my own) but I'm trying to minimize the amount of time crawling around in the snow and ice.

I managed to snag a set of four piston calipers (for the princely sum of $10!) but it took nearly two hours to chip them out of the ice so I could get to the lower mounting bolts.
Not sure it was really worth it...
