Door cylinder illumination question

Does anyone know under what conditions the door cylinder illumination will turn on for an S5? Not the ignition cylinder illumination that turns on when you open the door. I'm talking about the ring around the door lock.

Like is it on all the time?

Or only after you lock the car up?

The factory ecu omits this description. Just wondering because I think it would be swell if it worked. Mine was painted over but I've had the thing apart and tried a bunch of stuff and the only way I could get it to light up was to apply power directly to the bulb.

when you pull up on the handle the light inside the keyhole comes on. Its tied to the ignition switch light so im guessig they go on and off together. They are on a timer and go out after a while.

OK so if the door is locked I can walk up lift up on the handle and the light will come on so I can see where to put the key at night?

Does it only happen when the door is locked or when it's unlocked as well?

Anyone have a working one to double verify the operation?

I don't doubt you augiedogie just trying to see if I can get it to work. Its one of the only things taht doesn't work on the car at this time.

I don't actually know if it works locked or unlocked. But yes it should come on when you pull up the handle so you can find the hole.

My bulb was burnt out after 18 years... thinking of replacing it with an LED.
