Does this sound like a decent price for an 88 TII? New to the rx-7 world.

Does this sound like a decent price for an 88 TII? New to the rx-7 world.

88 rx-7 turbo, 49k miles, black with grey leather interior, totally loaded, new clutch and exhaust $4250

He called me back right when I needed to leave for work so I forgot to ask him a few of the things I meant to but

He has owned it for 10 years and bought it with 38k miles on it. It has been garaged it whole life and has zero rust. He says the only things wrong with it are a few paint chips on the front, little wear on the driverside leather seat, and the am side of the radio doesn't work.

Assuming it is in really good shape and only has 49k miles on it(Clutch and seat wear worry me, Ill carfax it) is $4k a good deal? These cars don't pop up very often near me so I don't have a lot to compare it too but it seems pretty decent to me.

Anything specific to the turbos to look out for? I found this page for na cars already.

Thanks

Sounds good to me. Check the compression jusst to be sure. Make sure it starts and idles fine. Drive it and make sure theres no power surges. Take off the turbo to intercooler pipe and make sure theres no excess of oil on the inside walls. Look at everything twice. Try everything twice. Windows, blinkers, sunroof, buttons. If it all seems to work fine, $4000 is a steal. what color is it?

Well I dont know, the problem with rotaries believe it or not is they need to be run hard once a day. It burns up a great deal of carbon out of the motor which can do some serious damage when it builds up... Make sure it doesnt flood, make sure it doesnt leak anything. Get the car nice and warm and when its idling put your hand around the radiator to make sure there are no cold spots on it, make sure no gears grind, compression check it, do a carfax or equivalent report, make sure there is no under car rust. Check all eletrical switches... Ugh, its turbo but if it is check for shaft play. All the usual ****

If the car has 50k miles on it, I dont see why there would be any significant damage to the seat... But if the clutch is dead its probably been run pretty hard then again stock clutches suck. The paint I wouldnt be that concerned about, you wont find any old car with out a chip unless it was just repainted. Even most new cars have small chips... Check under the car for scrape markings (never know). Try to get him to drop down the price a bit because of the radio/seat/dead clutch. A good clutch will probably cost ~700$ to buy. Also check around the motor to make sure there isnt any significant damage to vac lines (cracking etc from the heat). Maybe pull off the tid and check out the turbo and the vac lines going to the tid and the tid itself.

his post says it has a new clutch, if the car is as nice as it sounds that price is a steal.

Thanks for the info

There is a 60% chance of rain/snow from Fri-Sun for just about the whole 4 hour trip to look at it so I am not sure I will go now. I don't mind driving in crappy weather but its hard to look at cars in it . I don't know though. Its not like 50k mile turbos pop up very often and I don't wont miss it so I may have to go.

Hopefully the weather outlook will start to get better the closer to Sat we get.

I know I sound like a pessimist, but I'd examine the car very closely. It's hard for me to believe he's only put 11,000 miles on the car in 10 years. Seat worn-shouldn't be, clutch replaced, shouldn't have needed one. Look at the brake and clutch pedal for any indication of wear.
Good Luck

I know it has a new clutch, but a 50k car shouldnt NEED a new clutch. Thats what I was getting at.
dr0x meant they need to be run good a minimum of 2 times a month.
I meant what I wrote.

Sounds like a good deal to me. I payed 5000 for mine and it's an 89, with 85k on it. So 4k sounds about right and yours sounds like it's in a little better condition than mine..
