Does anyone have experience buying a car from long distances
I did. First of all I asked alot of questions. Had them take Lots of photos inside and out and mail them to me. Once we agreed on price I sent the Check and they overnighted the Title. Dont expect the car to be "everything" they say it is. But for the most part its not a bad way to do business. Just Pay accordingly for soemthing sight unseen. I would not pay market value for anything I couldnt see. But make sure you take your time and ask the right questions. Also take your time and get to know they guy selling it. What he does... Where he works... All his info... Check it out. Call him at work... And so on.. You can buy a car sight unseen. Hudreds of people do it everyday. Its not much worse than buying a used car any other way IMO.
Lots of experience... sort of
For 5+ years I operated ThePartsTrader.com and have seen hundreds, if not thousands of cars purchased over a long distance.
The most cautious buyers actually travel to the seller and look at the car. A long time ago I worked with a guy that flew from Alabama to New York to buy a Supra. The seller was to meet him at the airport with the car and the deal was to go down there. Luckily for my co-worker he had purchased a round trip ticket. Yea he ate the ~$400 plane ticket and a weekend of his time but the car that was described to be "Showroom Condition" was in terrible condition. I don't remember all the details but my co-worker doubted it would of made the drive back to Alabama.
But that is about the worst case I have ever seen. At the other end of the spectrum I heard of a guy buying a car based on the sellers description and photos sent via email. And when the car (1st Gen RX) was delivered to him he was in shock to find that the car was in better condition than he had been described and was way under priced (items like new shocks, new tires, etc. had been added after the sale had been arranged).
With the knowledge I have about buying and selling online because of ThePartsTrader I suggest you do everything in your power to go and look at the car before you hand over the money. Even if you don't have the time to drive it back.. Fly out.. look at it.. arrange shipping for the car and fly home.

My turbo II came out of maryland (I'm in Atlanta). I talked ot the guy for 2 weeks before buying it.
While most of what he said was true, he "forgot" to mention a hesitation problem which turned out to be a warped intake manifold and cracks in the intake piping.
He also forgot to mention the nose, plastic nose underbody, & fog lamps needed to be replaced and some rear suspension links & an A arm were missing.
All in all I spent $1200 after buying the car - so not too bad. It had a new engine & the car worked perfectly.
The covertible came from Charleston SC and was just as he said. The trans & seat covers needed a bit of work, but the car was excellent overall. I spend ~$2000 after getting a SWEET discount during the purchase - so not too bad either

I live in Virginia and I bought my 90 vert out of Atlanta. I had a friend that lived in the area go take the car out and then to a local dealer for a checkup in the shop. After all this I then made my deal for the car. I had it shipped to me via comercial truck. Car has turned out to be pretty nice ride.
I live in Washington state and bought a car in NC and drove it home. The car runs great. It was really dirty when I picked it up, but it cleaned up well and is everything I thought it would be.

I baught my car from Victoria and when i was pleased with the guy his attitude his info and all of that i made arrangements to meet him at the airport in Vancouver and we drove to a mall and the deal went down there! but the bad thing is my turbo went on my way home!!! not cool!!! lots of oil going down my tail pipe! it has since been fixed! but it is a good way to get to know the guy find out his attitude see if he sounds like a reasonable guy!
My Blue TII
I bought mine in Michigan from BlueTII aka. Chris Sanders. Saw the pics. Flew to Michigan and drove it back 9 hours later to NY. Took 12 hours but it made it. Still have it and love it.
Nothing to really add here... I'm from California, got my TII from Tennessee. I shipped with Dependable Auto Transports, no complaint with their services. Car was previously a show car, so it was in excellent condition for a 13 year old vehicle! And only 43,000 original miles!
Just make sure you notarize the deal, and maintain a healthy line of communication with the seller. If for ANY reason you decide you don't like the guy, don't buy the car. For me, the seller and I were both more concerned for the car's well being, than for being ripped off, that's how I knew I had a winner. =P Good luck!
