It sounds like it's coming from the drive shaft but I assume it's a bearing in the end of the transmission. There is a little bit of up and down movement when I grab the DS and push up and down but the seal doesn't appear to be leaking at all. What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the shitty vid. Paul

It's whatever is rubbing on the shaft..you can see a piece of metal that is making a mark on it.

If I'm seeing what I think you are talking about that's just a bad camera angle. Nothing is touching the drive shaft. Now the piece on the end of the drive shaft might be rubbing the trans.

I need to find a manual for the trans

the driveshaft has a dust cup on it that protects the tail seal.
If that cup gets bent it will rub the trans case at the tail.
Check that out.

Yeah I was thinking that might be the issue. Let me run this by you and see what you think. Like an idiot I forgot to mention this in the first post but it only does this noise when I back up or when downshifting/engine breaking. Now what I think might be happening is the long shaft that's in the trans that's connecting to the driveshaft has a little bit of play so when I back up or let off the throttle it forces it up a bit and that protective cap rubs and makes that noise. There are 4 little vents in that cap and when I rotate it, it looks like it might be rubbing the trans (one side is cleaner on the tail under the cap). I hope that makes sense

One reason I believe this is the issue is ever since I bought the car the trans has been noisy, like bearing noise. So I think there could be enough play in there to let the shaft move a bit.

If this is the issue would it be possible to cut the cap off without throwing the DS balance off? I know the best thing to do it fix replace the trans but that's just not an option right now. I guess I could pull the driveshaft and grind a few thousands off the trans where it's rubbing lol, or just do what I'm doing now and don't engine brake

Edit: BTW when I made the video I had the car in reverse and pulled the e-brake up a bit to make the issue clear.....or louder I guess ha.

Ive done many clutches on these cars, and up until I did a pilot bearing for a friend, I had never seen this mystical 'cup'. Id cut it off lol

I think I might put it back up on stands and get it to make the noise again then spray WD40 on the "cup/cap" and see if that stops the noise. If so, I guess I'll cut it off.

BTW I don't remember this cup/cap on any of my other RX7's but it's been a while since I've owned one.
