Do I need a new TPS?

Hi,

Currently have a 88 N/A and quite a problem. After getting my car back from the body shop (fender replacement) I noticed that the car had no power and basically sounded like crap. The guys at the shop said they had problems starting the car (major flooding) and that the plugs were fouled. I got the car home, changed out the plugs, and the car continued to run like crap. It was having a hard time maintaining an idle and had little to no power. I then proceded to tear out the throttle body and intake chamber and cleaned everything out, took out the EGR and installed a block plate (no cats of course), and replaced all the vacuum hoses. Now, the car seems to be running a little rich and will not hold an idle (every once in awhile it will idle harshly for a few minutes then die).

So, in an attempt to fix the idle, I tested the TPS (green wire). To my surprise I was getting NO reading (0.0 ohms) for resistance. Does this mean the TPS is toast??? Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

James

Sounds like a pretty extreme case to have it fail completely like that. Normally in that kind of device there's a gradual period of failure where it doesn't work 100%, but it works better than 0%.

I honestly don't know which wire is the green wire. Get out your Haynes manual. They've got a nice picture of the TPS plug. Test according to that and let us know what you get at with no throttle and with full throttle. If you get 0 ohms then there's definately a problem and you need a new TPS.

I'm probably reading too much into what you wrote, and I don't know how good your meter is or how it operates, but often with digital meters you won't get 0.00ohms, you'll get something like 0.04 ohms if there is truely no resistance. What I'm trying to suggest is that perhaps you weren't touching the lead correctly if you got 0.00 ohms?

How did you test resistance to just the green wire?
You should probe the green and black wires for resistance.
Is this what you did?

I think you tested it wrong. Try it one more time the right way like Ted said. It could be still good but way out of adjustment.
