So i pulled off the RB header on my '88 n/a manual, and found black silicone-looking sealant all over the metallic looking gasket. I've got a new gasket ala mazdatrix.
do i need sealant, or is the gasket adequate?

Just the gasket, NO SEALANT.
Scrape all traces of the remaining stuff off!

 

Get new lock washers, or you will be replacing that header gasket again.
