Do braided stainless lines last longer than OEM rubber?

The burst SS brake lines aren't a myth, it happens, but it's not exactly common. Just replace them periodically and you'll be fine.
Say what? Its not a myth of it happends. That amount of SS lines that are bought and installed compaired to the amount that burts is very very small, but it does and can happen.

Also, I wouldn't want to periodically change my SS lines.

It does happen, and I said it's rare. By periodically I meant maybe once every 5 years.

OK, so to summarize, if I opt for the stainless Mazdatrix lines, I'll probably want to replace them again in five years or so. If that set is $200 and the OEM cloth/rubber hoses are about $360 but could last another 20 years, the stainless is not looking like much of a bargain unless I don't plan on keeping the car another five years. Add in the pain-in-the-*** factor of the stiffness of the stainless hoses in terms of installation, plus the fear that my car will be the 1 in 100 (or whatever the stats are) where the lines suddenly burst at a fitting.

I think I'll be going OEM.

You could take them to a hydraulics (or something) shop and see if they can replicate the OEM ones.
