DIY MS2 kit thoughts

So having had to sell my Haltech to fund moving out of state, I have been looking at buying a new (reasonably) cheap EMS for my project. I don't like buying used stuff since *MOST* of the time it either starts broken or ends up there very quickly because of improper care.

I was a computer tech for ~4 years so I have some decent experience with soldering/electrical diagrams/etc. I found these kits on the DIY auto tune site and have read through Aaroncakes write up about it and it seems like its fairly straight forward and reasonably priced to set up. On top of that, I'll be working with a bunch of new sensors that I won't have to worry about flaking out on me.

I was wondering if anyone on this board has tried or is currently running one of the MS2 systems and would be able to chime in on their thoughts about it and the features it has. I'll be running it for a drag car that will occasionally see the streets.

Im not looking to find any info on the assembly as I think that will be the easy part. I'm trying to find out what people here who use it think of it as a EMS for street use as well as racing. Like tuning difficulty and what they think of it, good and bad, compared to other EMS's they've used.

I can't compare it to anything as I'v never had a haltech or powerfc. My tuning other than the MS2 was stock ecu remapping.

Unless you buy the prebuilt kit the assembly will be the hardest part. Aaron's walk-through is perfect. Tuning is really easy. There's a link somewhere on diyautotune.com to a software pack that a bunch of nice goodies to make it easy.

Bottom line: price vs. performance

I think your going to have problems finding a setup that "cheap" with all the features that you get. I only say "cheap" cause i spent 800 on my whole setup. New sensors, wires, pigtails, taps, ect.

Running the MS2 on my 87 TII and my EFI converted 78 International Scout.

I don't have experience with them yet, but a guy I work with strongly suggested I put one on my Turbo II after I mentioned my interest in the megasquirt. I'm glad someone like aaroncake is willing to put out such good information so specific to our application. It's also my understanding that one of the original developers of the megasquirt ecu was into RX-7s and therefore they are naturally easier to install on the 7. I'm planning to do one soon. I know it has features already for staged injection, there is a way to use stock RX-7 ignition system/sensors. I can't wait!
