The FSM also states a 6.5% allowable error for the tacho, so it might be reading 9050rpm before hitting it.

That might be it then. As I recall, it was just above 9K.

I still don't see how it's possible to "break" a piece of computer coding. I reckon if you've never hit a rev limiter then either you aren't revving it high enough or there was simply no limiter in the first place.
Quite true...I would simply assume that the very early 86's just don't have it.

I have a 88 GXl and a 90 GTU

my 90 GTU has no rev limitor at all but my 88 GXL will hit the rev limitor at around 8500 according to the SAFC2.

I want to remove the rev limitor myself on my 88 GXl.

There has to be some way of doing it.

i have taken my s4 up to around i am guessing 8500 rpms because my tach doesnt go up that far obviously. the only reason i took it up that far was because it just kept up the power curve and kept pulling. i never had a fuel cut before but i RARELY take my car up that far because there is no real reason to do it, but i have heard of others having it............odd

Swap ECUs, or reprogram the stock one....But there's no reason to do this. Increasing the speed of the engine past the stock redline just moves it farther and farther out of it's powerband....
