Ok. A 89-91 is called a Series 5. The trim levels are differenet for each Series, so i will give you the low down on the years you want. The GTU is the base model for 89-90. It has power nothing, which makes it better for racing. The GTUs is a very rare N/A (non-turbo) that was made for racing purposes, and it has special rims and 4.33 gears in the differential. The 90 is more rare than the 89. The TII is the turbo model. All options are present:power locks, ABS brakes, adjustible suspension, sunroof, etc. The GXL is the luxury model, which has power options. In 91, there were only 2 models available: The TII and the Coupe. The TII is exactly like all other TIIs, but the Coupe was the non turbo that you could get any option on. The options were, for the most part, dealer installed. Series 4 (86-88) the GXL was the base, the SE (or Special Edition) was a GXL with a few goodies, the AE TII (or Anniversary TII) was an option in 1988 only, and the GTU was the luxury. I am pretty sure these are right!!

Y eah I concur with Rico.....if u plannin on gettin a 7 depending on the level of performance u r lookin for....the T2 is the way to go for some real performance...but if u r the old school type and want power w/out adders then a good ported n/a is very decent especially for a beginner....

You have a J-Spec car, imported from Japan. That model (along with GT-X, GT-R) were never sold in America. Congratulations....I hate and envy you!!!! Yes, it was a limited production TII.

I've got an '86 that doesn't say GXL or anything except Mazda and RX7 on the back.I've got no power anything, but do have a sun roof. This is the base model, right? It looks to be the original paint.

Probably a Luxury coupe. Does it have power mirrors? All the Luxury models had power mirrors 4 lug alloy wheels.

But if it has 5 lug wheels then it is more than likely a Sport.

Its got 4-lug 14" wheels, 4-wheel disc brakes ,power mirrors, cruise control, air con,100 watt etr am/fm cassette with equalizer and a sun roof.
Than this would be the luxury model. Does this differ from a base model or is the luxury package the base for that year/('86)

Very informative Post, bro.
Posts like this definitely steer you away from the term postwhore. I never understood why people called you one. 10 posts a day of information is pretty easy, I know I am doing more than that now.
Keep up the good work.
-Your big brother.
PS: ket us know how you fair tomorrow with the header install.

Anyone got this info for the Canadian models? (like the GX?)

The Luxury model is a $1000 (new) step up from the base. The base did not come with tinited glass, cruise, high power radio, or power mirrors, some early bases may have even had steel wheels.

And Rico's series 4 info:
Series 4 (86-88) the GXL was the base, the SE (or Special Edition) was a GXL with a few goodies, the AE TII (or Anniversary TII) was an option in 1988 only, and the GTU was the luxury. I am pretty sure these are right!!
His series 4 info is all wrong.

The GXL was the top line fully loaded NA model
The SE was a Base strippy model. (nearest I can tell this was the Canadian GX)
The 10th AE was a T2 with every option (only 1500 made). It was not an option package it was its own model.
The GTU was a GXL minus the AAS suspension, leather, rear wiper, but included the T2/vert/Sport heavy duty suspension, and the sports aero kit. The sport and GTU were also the Canadian GS.

here's more series 4 stuff if you need it: http://home.earthlink.net/~icemark/FCseries4.htm

Mazda kept messing with the models names over the years...

There was a "base model" for 1986-1987.
This base model turned into an "SE" model in 1988.
For 1989, the base model turned into a "GTU", which confuses a lot of people.

The 1987 "Sport" model was a "turbo without a turbo engine", which turned into the 1988 "GTU" and eventually "GTUs" for 1989 and 1990.

The GXL was always the top-of-the-line luxury edition. (Mazda claimed the Turbo II was a GXL with a turbo motor in it.)

In 1991, it's last model run, Mazda simplified the models into "Coupe" (A or B package), GXL, Turbo (II), and Convertible.

Is it safe to say that a 1991 coupe, with the 4 pot calipers up front, vented discs on the rear, all power is a TII w/o the turbo? Also, is that the "A" or "B" package? To rephrase my question...If you yank the motors from my car and a TII and put them next to each other, will they be otherwise identical (ex. in weight)???
