differences between S4 and S5 center consoles

I want to get a later model (S5) center console. This is the armrest/small cuby lid that also holds the power mirror switch. I'm replacing mine and thought it would be cool to have the one that opens sideways. I was asking a person on a local list who is parting out an S5 for one and he says that my 88 won't fit up with the newer console. He said that the motors for the seatbelts are underneath them so it won't fit right. This doesn't make sense to me, but since I've never really seen these. Can anybody tell me if I can fit the newer S5 console on the S4.

Thanks

the s5 ones are a more rubber type material making them better by not being so easy to crack. To convert, i think you would need the s5 radio surround and shifter surround and it's all lagit.

He's right, only it's not the motors under there, it's the retractors. Also, the sideways-opening console ain't all it's cracked up to be. It tends to grab the side of the passenger seat and it's not convenient to get into at all. Also, there's a lot less storage room in it because of the seatbelts.

Good luck!

I had an S5 center consol in my 87TII and it's a direct replacement of the S4. There is less storage inside, but it fits fine with no modification.
