Yes some of the 'internals' are different, no they are not inherantly stronger.

I know the rotors are lower compression, I dont think the seals are too much different though.

Man, there are so many differences between a non turbo and turbo motor... it would be hard to put them all here and not miss some.

housing related differences:

Front housing:
aux port eliminated on turbo motors
oil suction hole added on turbo motors

Intermed housing:
intake port shape and timing changed on turbo motors
air passage for EGR eliminated on turbo motors
port air passage added on turbo motors
water passage added on turbo motors
oil level pipe shortened on turbo motors
oil filler pipe shape changed on turbo motors

rear housing:
aux port eliminated on turbo motors

Front and rear rotor housings:
water passage added on turbo motors
free flow exhaust port added on turbo motors
port air passage opposite on turbo than non turbo

front cover:
oil return hole added

rotor:
volumn of rotor recess enlarged on turbo motors
cromium plating applied to apex seal grove on turbo motors

side seal:
inpregnated with molybdenum disulfide on turbo motors

flywheel:
larger diameter and heavier on turbo motors

Of course this is just for the FC, not the SA/FB and there were no non turbo FD models.

and why did you start so many thread on this same subject??? you best not be post whoring!

As for interchangeability, they share one part: the eccentric shaft. And front pulley, water pump, alternator, that is about it. Everything from the engine to the axles is different. As far as what is stronger in the engine, not really anything. Just different specs/design. Everything from the flywheel back is stronger, however.

you sure turbos got differnt side seals? The part number is the same. Also I thought only the competition rotors had chrome apex groves?.. anyhow it boils down to a few water passagges, oil stuff to support the turbo, lower compression and intake exhaust ports, all the turbo/ non turbo parts can be mixed and matched to achieve the ports and compression ratio you want as long as you plug up and passages not being used in your application.

I just put down what Mazda listed in 87 as the major changes between the turbo and non-turbo motors. I wouldn't be surprised if they started using the same side seals regardless of motor. As far as the chrome apex grove, I have only seen that on 87-88 turbo motors, but I have only rebuilt a half dozen total 13B/13BT motors. Kevin would probably know better.

All the seals and springs on the 86-91 turbo and nonturbos are identical. The housings, rotors, and irons all differ.
