diff fluid

Hey guys im swappin out my tranny and rear end for T2 and i did about an hour of searching and learned a lot about the fluids for the tranny and diff, i feel pretty good about filling up the tranny and i've decided on 3 qts of Redline MT90 for the tranny and 2 qts of Redline 75W-90 for the rear end.

My question though is what you guys think about filling up the rear end while its out of the car befor mounting it up there to make the job a little easier? I dropped my NA diff without draining the fluids on it and had no problem so i dont see why it would be a problem to fill the new one up before mounting it... any thoughts? Has anyone done this?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, fill it up in advance, it's a bitch doing it under the car.

While you COULD do it while it's under the car (I did mine while I had the car up, doing the clutch), it's a ****-ton easier to do it while it's out. When it's mounted, there isn't really any way to get it into the pumpkin without a pump that has a flexy-bendy-necky- thing.

I second Oakback... Galoomp that stuff in, before it's mounted. Alot easier (NTM alot cleaner - 75 and 90w gearlube is some pretty icky crap... Kinda like a combination of snot, Okra slime, jizz and slug-trail ooze).

...and the smell stays on your for days. And in the concrete if you spill any.

It's been years, and sometimes on hot days I still catch a whiff of gear oil from my driveway.

Smells like stale cabbage....

Just make sure you don't over-fill the diff. If it was me, fill it out of the car, then once the diff was under the vehicle again and settled at the normal angle it would sit at, pull the fill plug off again and let any excess drain out. Or even top it off if you under-fill it.

I put 2 whole quarts from what I read that's pretty standard. It was bone dry before I started

Holy ****, man. Are you serious? You had a completely EMPTY diff? That's, ah.... Not so good.

And yes. Volume is 2qt.

buy a 10$ hand pump from wally world or something and filling is a breeze. fill it until the fluid is level with the bottom of the fill hole (until it starts dripping out on level ground)
