Diagnosing between input and pilot bearing issues..
Recently took my car out of storage and whenever the clutch is INGAGED it makes a nice whining sound depending on load and anything below ~3000RPM.
I've diagnosed that it is not my release or throw out bearing because it makes this sound when my clutch is engaged. A throw out bearing would make this noise whenever the clutch was depressed, correct?
So now that I’ve come to the conclusion as to it's either a pilot or input bearing how do I know which? This may be a stupid question but are a pilot/input bearing the same thing just different names?
How hard is it to change this bearing once the transmission has been ripped out? Is it an interference fit needing a small press or anything?
Thanks

It's a main bearing in the front of the transmission - you'll also probably have problems downshifting into 1st without stopping completely and into 2nd above about 20 mph.

Once pilot bearings start to go, they go fairly quickly. and make a horrible grinding noise in the process, kinda like grinding sand and metal together. Once they go, they tend to put more wear on the input shaft bearing.
Neither are terribly hard to change out. Just more of a pita than any thing else.

whats up Chad
I changed my clutch about a month ago and if you have the pilot bearing puller it should come out after a few tries. i rented it from partsource. you should also change your release bearing if you take the tranny out, just in case.
go to sunridge mazda so you can get a 15% student discount

It could be the pilot bearing, as well as the input shaft bearing.
You pilot bearing is in the center of the flywheel, and the transmission input shaft bearing is where the bell housing ends, and the input shaft dissapears into the trans case.
