Destroyed Stock Turbo (fun pics within!)

A while back when I was driving I heard quite a strange noise, which at the time I assumed my turbo seals had suddenly failed all at once as the turbo started. 'smoking' interestingly and made quite the silly noise when spooling (Imagine one of those 'wolf wistle' woooooooh! sounds.) However, amazingly, the car did drive fine, as well as even boost fine, so I hadn't decided to tear into it until today. (I was going to get it send to BNR regardless because I knew at least the seals had died.)

I took off the TID to find this:

As well as this in the intercooler:

Yep, that's a big ol' gob of chewed up, oily self sealing tape.

A number of months back I had done a repair job on the TID (which had a number of cracks on it) so that I could squeak by emissions without buying a new one, the components of which did include a fair bit of self sealing tape and epoxy. Over time the oil seeping in from the PCV weakened it and eventually the turbo sucked it through.

I'm sure there's a lesson to be learned in this... somewhere. I'll be doing a scary compression test soon to see if/and how many little compressor wheel pieces actually reached the rotors.

the somewhere is not to apply sealing tape on the inside of the TID. if anything a little RTV on the crack and seal it up on the outside allowing the RTV to harden before installing it. TIDs are stupid expensive new.. good reason to go standalone and ditch it!

damn.

I hope the engine is ok lol
When the turbo gets chewed up like that, the little metal particles will flow right into the engine and can cause serious damage to the internals.

IE : this is what happened to mines when the turbo nut decided to cause some damage

Compression went from 90psi on all faces to 60psi

Or just buy a cheap-*** 2-2.5-3 inch steel pipe, cut it and weld it at an angle, and put it on the turbo and on the AFM. Requires open filter, but what the heck. Cheaper than standalone for the regular guy. Actually got a tad bit better response and sound of it as well.
