Alright, I've got a buddy that has this **** on his 7


He said it was just a piece of wood that sat on the **** and tightened with the screw on top

Well, I want something like that.
Like a **** thats 'deep' so it's kind of like a short shifter.

Why not get the miata short shifting kit...
and what's wrong with those two ebay ***** - they should be fine.

 

i have one i made...
go to autozone advance ect. and pick yourself out a ****. then go to ace, home depot, lowes ect. and get a zinc nut (works best) that fits your threads. then use the grinding wheel in your woodshop class ot at your friends house to make it just a little too big and then puond it in.
there ya go.
mine has been in for over a year and the nut doesnt free spin or anything it works and looks great

 

I dunno how much you're looking to spend but I've dealt with those cheap universal ones with the screws and they come loose in a matter or weeks. I have a sparco globe:

on my S4 shifter and it works great. The middle part where your hand goes is leather/vynil or whatever so your hand doesn't get cold lol. I wish it was weighted a little though, oh well. You can get them for like 70 bucks online, another good one is the GReady counterweight shift ****, its like 40 bucks.

 

get and S5 shift lever, chop an inch off of it, re-tap it and throw on a weighted RX-8 **** and you'll be golden

 

Im not positive, but I heard those Miata Short Shifters screw up your syncro's. Is that true? Because I've seen many 7's with those shifters.

That doesn't sound to bad. But I'm still open to any 'deep' *****.

And yeah- I've tryed a autozone **** and it did that. And they don't even had plain, normal black ones...

 

Another Q-
is there a way to drill out the stock ****?

Could I drill into it with a bit and make it deeper?
So it could screw more onto the shift lever and sit lower?

A "short shifter" has nothing to do with the length of the lever ABOVE the fulcrum point. It refers to the length of the lever BELOW the fulcrum. Shortening it doesn't affect the throw. In fact, it'll make it more difficult to shift.

 

I just want something that sits a little lower on the lever so it doesn't stick up so far. I'm not in it for short shifting because thats not really an issue. I just think the **** sits a little high

 

Yea then you're going in the right direction with the ****. I was referring to the comment about chopping the shift lever.

 

alrighty... well my s4 **** is cracked now and I've got an old spare from a honda. I'll try drilling some out of the stock **** tomorrow or Tuesday. Then I'll update :-)

 

Hmm... I think I might get one of those NRG *****.

Apparently some total tools on NSX Prime were paying 75 bucks for the same *****.

They're slightly cheaper than the Voodoo *****, same size, might weigh more (the Voodoo ones are aluminum and too light IMO...about half the stock weight), and since they're carbon fiber (looks ricey in pictures but they don't look that bad in real life, where there is no flash...) they hopefully won't be as hot.

I'd imagine they wouldn't come lose as long as you glue the crap out of them. Those Sparco and Momo ones are even worse, since they don't even have threads IIRC, they just have screws sort of jamming them in place.

 

I got a Razo ****, and it comes with these nifty little plastic inserts that you thread the shifter into. It holds incredibly well, and allows you to adjust the **** exactly how you like it. It's also small, round, and quite heavy.

 

I considered getting a Razo but figured I didn't want anything with lettering, or flat black.

Carbon fiber or brushed aluminum would be Teh Secks though.

 

The one I have is like a polished dark gunmetal. Looks sorta like hematite.

 

I use a Razo ****. It's great!

 

The Ebay Miata shorthrow actually Consists of 2 pieces.So if you want to you can lower the shift **** Almost to the Transmission!..or as mentioned Chop a Hunk of the top and Retap it.

 

Well.. I tried drilling out the stock **** and got nothing. I almost drilled straight through, but I stopped just before it cracked the plastic on top. Then I went to the car, screwed it on the lever and it didn't go any lower than before. So I'm back where I started.

I guess I'll just look around for a **** thats 'deeper'.
Once again... Any suggestions?

 

I just realized what you meant by deep lol. The sparco one I have sat so low when I first put it on I had to put in the ring thingy that screws under the stock **** (thing that you wrap the boot around) back. I turned it so it sat as high as it could...still really low. Our stock **** is pretty damn long so any nice ball shift **** should work for you.

 

I got my NRG shift **** in the mail today... pretty damn fast considering it came from California (although I DID pay 10 bucks for shipping... First Class is some good stuff).

I like it. At first I thought it looked a little big (same size as Voodoo magnum), but once installed it looks just right, and it feels even better (but that's because I place my hand on TOP, which is why I like ball-type *****).

I don't imagine it's coming lose any time soon... it was a bitch to get on all the way to the bottom... that, and I applied sealant to the cap, and locktite to the cap screw.

The caps don't actually have threads... you just force it over the threads by pushing and twisting (hopefully it'll be easier to get off when I need to remove it to install a new outer boot).

It doesn't really feel any lower than the stock one. Meaning, I need to get a short shifter because I have to extend my arm all the way out for fifth gear.


The weight is somwhere between 60 and 70% of the stock **** (which is really, really heavy compared even to most tuner *****...except the Greddy and Razo ones that are basically miniature anvils on a stick).

 

Just get a stock s5 ****. You'll be surprised how much lower it sits then the massive s4 ****.

 

yeah just did it b/c i sat way to high for my taste, an inch off it and it was gravy. What i dont get is the people who chop it WAY down so its practically at the surround . . .

I had that on my old T2, it was awesome. I'm getting another one for my new T2.

 

shortening the shifter more than an inch or so is going to make it harder to shift due to less leverage. unless your syncros are perfect or if your **** is heavy weighted i would leave it alone.
