Angry Damn Rotary Exaust Fumes!!!!!!!!!!!

Alright, I'm so SICK and TIRED of damn near coughing to DEATH. I have T2 with full racing exaust (no cats), and in the summer time or when I'm driving with my windows down and come to a complete stop, all the ******* exaust fumes come into the cockpit and I literely start hacking and coughing to death. what is the best way to get rid of the fumes? I'm about to put my cats on because this **** bothers me so much. the smell of exaust from a rotary is DETRAMENTAL AND HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH. any suggestions? thanks

Buy a high-flow cat for the summer months and switch it out for a straight pipe in the winter months.

well i should be more in the geen yellow area, its wayy rich, like peaking out the meter at idle and driving sometimes, waiting for the probe for my EGT to come in.

BTW whats a good number for EGT on a mild streetport NA with headers and no cats.

I know that I'm not running rich because of my a/f gauge, I have no exaust leaks, but my eyes start to water when I come to a stop because of how strong the fumes are. I know it is not just me because my friend has the same problem.. I don't even risk bringing a girl into the car. I guess that I just have to deal with it unless I want to lose power and put my stock cats or a highflow cat on.

You are funny. I have not cats and the only time my eyes get watery is when I stand behind the car. You have to have something wrong bro. My GF rides with me every day to school to work and back home. So do my friends. Non of them have ever complained. You are probably running rich.

Rich, maybe holes in the exhaust? Or maybe the exhaust tips don't pass far enough from the bumper, and it flows back into the cab?

I would check out the whole exhaust from manifold back....seen it before on my Fieros and others, if you have a leak up front or under the car, there are enough places for the fumes to travel into the interior. Check for holes AND for any missing or loose bolts. Also--When did this start? With the system you are running, did the car ever NOT do this or did it start as soon as you put it on?

Ya I only have problems if I stand directly behind mine breathing deep. True my is not a turbo but I have no cats and barely a muffler. I sit right in the middle of the stoich range at idle.

Make sure your exhaust goes at least 2" beyond the bumper. This helps cut down on the noise in the car as well.

most of the fumes, in my situation, come form the center where the shift boot is... i have a gash/hole in my shift boot and can can feel air coming in when i drive... if you take the **** and cover off, you will see a layer of some fiber padding, and underneath that is a rubber/polyurethane seal.. most of the time they have holes or the sides are not sealed ..

try sealing them up with glue on the sides and tape any holes you see... but if anything fumes will still enter through the center where the shifter is but not as much..

hope this might help

Holy thread resurrection Batman!

Anyhow, check all the seals in the rear of the vehicle, the hatch seal, taillight gaskets, etc. This can also be a source of exhaust fumes entering the car.

The exhaust doesn't smell anywhere near as bad if the idle is a leaner and the idle speed is higher. I idle around 900rpm (big streetport) at 13:1 AFR (I do have a standalone though). Somewhat higher idle speeds can tolerate leaner mixtures, and leaner mixtures don't smell as bad. If you have an s4 you can use the variable resistor to lean out the idle some.

having no cats or running rich shouldn't spill fumes in your car the only times i have ever smelled fumes is when my windows are open and the window is blowing towards the front of my car, either there are small leaks in the exhaust or the rubber shift boot is torn and 99% of 7's have a torn rubber boot.

Lightweights. I have no complaints with my top down idling at 12.5-13 AFR. As long as you're not idling in your garage with the door closed, you'll be fine.

Werd. I've run straight exhaust with my NA + my TII, no problems. I guess you just get used to it. I do miss the smell though... I need to get her running again
