It's been awhile since I've had mine apart, but two boots and insulation should be under console. That will keep heat from passenger comparment. Can't remember all of the heat shields under the car and if any protect that area without looking under the car.

There should be two aluminum shields between the exhaust & the tranny.

There should also be a series of rubber boots that insulate from noise and heat.

Scroll down about halfway. Were all of the boots intact? They're available from the dealer, as well as Mazdatrix.
