So my friend just got his 1991 Celica All-Trac (Turbo All Wheel Drive) out of the shop after some major cam work. he wanted to run against me so I agreed and he blew my doors off as expected. Since i just got a new job that pays quite well, I am looking into buying either a TII engine or an aftermarket turbo kit. My goal for spring to to be able to leave the Celica behind with no problems. which of the 2 choices do you think is best for the price and the actual power output.

 

sell your car and buy a TII. The N/A to TII conversion is quite a bit of work. I hate doing the engine/wiring harness. I'll be doing it again soon for a friend of mine... ugh..

Buy a TII and mod it. That'll give you plenty of room in front of the celica and a bottleless of aspirin.

The point of this post wasn't to see if i should sell my car. I want to know which of the 2 mods provides more power and if they are worth their cost. When i bought my car i didn't want to start with a turbo and be able to run faster than everyone in my city, i wanted to be able to lose to people at first and then when they start bragging to all their friends about how they beat my rx-7 I'll have modded it in someway and be able to smoke them. I have a city of J-bodies and civics, there is no real competition here even for the NA. the fact remains, my NA is more of a project car in its own right...I want it to be faster, but not by selling it for a Turbo car. I want to be able to tell people that i made it that fast.

 

MarksMazda is doing the NA to TII conversion. He almost has his car running. You could always ask him if you have questions. Yeah, you'll DEFINATELY have more power. I don't think you can get an aftermarket turbo kit for an NA engine. Aaron Cake turbo'd his NA motor though.

 

what you can do is sell your car...get a T2...mod it yourself...and THEN tell everyone you did all the work in it (which you did!)

 

a stock turbo II beats a stock all track by 2 secs in the 1/4... they are not that fast.

a lightly moded TII would rape a lightly moded all track.

 

how about instead of putting on a turbo and going through all the problems which that procedure produces why don't you bolt on a supercharger? I have an 86 gxl with a streetport and fully custom exhaust and intake and putting on a super is going to be my next project. Think of it this way. No big changes have to be made by puttinf one on, their is no "turbo" lag and i think you can run up to 10-12 psi with it. Thats my 4 cents

Talk to Atkins Rotary in WA they will sell you a very nice kit for your N/A . dont buy the paxton S/C if you decide to go that way, I have never heard one good thing about that kit!

 

The 1991 Celica All-trac runs 15.7 and a 1987 RX-7 TII runs 15.3. Hardly a 2 second difference! a 0.5 second difference in the 15's is small enough the drive can easily make the difference. Since his is modded, he's almost definitly in the 14's if not faster.

Seriously, sell your NA and buy a TII! It's not worth it to turbo the NA (usually) because lots of custom work needs done to do it (can't buy a turbo kit for it), the engine is not very good for a turbo so you can't shoot for high horsepower, and in the end it will cost you more to turbo your NA than to sell your Na, buy a TII, and do a couple mods to it.

Buy a TII, do the basic mods for 400-1000 dollars(intake, free flow exhaust, front mount intercooler, fuel cut defeater, upgrade to 720cc secondary injectors, etc) and your car will walk all over his All-trac. These simple mods should give your TII at least 225 hp at the wheels.

 

A 3SGTE powered car is not to be fucked with lightly. Those engines stock are 190-230hp, and can be moded to the moon and back for 1000hp. ITs what they run in teh pike's peak tacoma. IF he has head/cam work, exhaust and intake, he can run about 20psi on the stock block and push around 300hp easy. You dont even have to upgrade fuel until around that point. Their only real weakness is the oiling system which isnt the best. The head is a very efficient yamaha design for a stock part. The turbo is not all that great however.

A t2 with intake and exhaust, fuelpump and FCD would probably take it though, as the celica is a hair heavy for its size. It is however AWD, and though the drivetrains arent really very good, he'll probably get you off the line badly time after time.

 

I see them at high 16's low 17's... they are like 3400lbs and once you start moving, the AWD is a disadvantage.

 

Actually, the alltrac will run the 1/4 mile in about 15.5-15.7 seconds. A stock Turbo II will run it in about 15 flat.

With a lightly modified T2, you should beat him easy. Open up the exhaust and its 50+ horsepower.

Also, it is better to sell your car and get a T2. The conversions are just not worth the time and money when you could buy a T2 thats ready-to-go.

I would say to only do a NA-t2 conversion if you know what you are doing, not that it's really hard, just it would be easy to get in over your head. If you like working on cars I would say go for it. Don't bother adding a turbo kit to your 6port motor. Go hypmitize's site he has a good how to NA/t2 conversion.

Out of pocket the conversion cost me about $1000, this is after selling all of the old parts that I took off the car.

 

As I can see, most of you are very anti NA to Turbo.

luv'n, I am definately considering a supercharger as well, i just forgot about it when i made the post.

As for the bolt on turbo kits. i have found 2 available for the 86-88 for about 2500, they don't look to be much trouble to do.

Also, I didn't give proper info about the Celica, it has TRD cams, Intake work and increased boost, he won't tell me exactly what hes running it at. I'm guestimating hes got it running around 250HP right now.

Last thing, I know you all would rather buy the TII than go through this, however i'm not you. My goal was to take an NA and make it fast, therefore, buying a TII defeats the purpose. This topic is about making the NA fast, not selling it for the TII.

 

Sell the N/A moneypit and buy a TII.

 

get a peripheral port and waste 'em. That way they can say "whoa you got a turbo" and you can say "no man.. 1.3L naturally aspirated".

Seriously though, I don't know a whole lot about turboing N/A's.. I would just try to find a (good) rebuilt ported TurboII motor and drop it in with all the proper parts.

 

I am not anti turbo 6-port, I think that Aaron and bambam's cars are very cool, it's just that I would rather have a setup that is proven reliable,and was developed by mazda engineres, not just some guy in his gargae (no offense to Aaron or BamBam)

A t2 conversion's not as hard as many people say, and when you are done you will know the car inside and out.

buy a used t2 parts car and mod ur car with all the goodies.
IE. tranny, drive shaft, rear end, engine, harness ,ecu. and u have a car to get some parts off of when u need it... hey sounds good to me...
