Custom Exhaust, What To Ask For?

I've heard getting an exhaust shop to do work is cheaper than premade, and can be equal or better performance. So what I want to know is what should I be asking for on my 89' TII? I don't plan to start with exhaust until I finish my below planned mods, but when it comes time, I want to know how much money I should save up for it for decent results, or if I should just get a premade system.

Planned Purchases Before Exhaust:
FCD
A'pexi Intake
New Pump
Boost Gauge
Turbo Timer (Worth it?)
MBC

TIA

Im currently making my own exhaust set up at the time. I'll give you all the info you need once I finish. And is a turbo timer worth it...it depends if you can let your car run a minute or so when your done driving it.If you allways have the habit of shutting the car off as soon as you park then get one.....tah tah simple as so there so ****** cheap.

I would have to say a turbo timer would be worth it...u can either A) sit in ur car for a good 5 min or B) have a computer be in charge of it and safely cool down the turbo...plus u can get them on ebay for 79.99$

Turbo timer is kinda worthless with a stock turbo. (from what ive read)

If you had a hybrid or something then definitly.

I can't really talk though because I have an apexi autotimer but bleh it was free and it looks nifty.

Try to find an exhaust shop that specialises in or has some experience with custom performance exhausts. Avoid chain stores. Talk to the builder and be sure he knows exactly what you want.

There is no reason to ever have to leave your engine idling for five minutes. Water-cooled turbos do not need to be cooled down through idling unless you were silly enough to be boosting right before shutdown. A short period of driving without boost before reaching your destination is all that's required. This is much more effective at cooling the turbo down than sitting stationary.

HKS makes good exhausts,
u only need a Turbo Timer if you are lazy to stay in the car after a hard run.

buy a down pipe. like racing beat for $100 or something. much easier and cheaper then trying to make a custom one. and buy another flange to mate to it. then have a shop build the rest.

turbo timer isn't worth it. I never leave mine on for more then 30 secs. and to set the stock alarm the car has to be off anyways. so you still need to wait at the car untill it turns off.

i agree with scott, get a downpipe, you can pick them up cheap. i think 125 for a 3'' from racing beat. i would perfer a reputable chain shop rather than a 'performance' shop, mainly cause all the performance shops in town here suck. but if the place dosnt have a mandrel bender. order a 3'' u-bend off the internet. thats all you should need to do a full exhaust as far as bends go. other than that, tell them you want everything MIG'ed the brazeing dosnt really hold up well. i would go with a downpipe you bought, a dynomaxor similar 3'' straight through presilencer, to go in the stock cat position, and then a single out whatever side you perfer. with your choice of muffler on the end

I really want to avoid a single setup if possible, I hate the look of the one side having the cut in the rear bumper without a pipe coming out

A DP is basically two 45deg bends with a length of pipe in between. What's hard about that?

I mean like overall size measurements and what components to ask for, not how to make a DP, lol
